In search of a Long-Lost Son, Glen Dubois
by Barbara Olivier
If you have any information on Glen, Ethel, Alec or any members of the West family,
please leave a message on our Project Dubois Discussion Area.
Alec A. Dubois, at age 100, is trying to locate his 80 year-old son!
Alec, born in 1899, is my oldest living relative, his father was the brother of
my grandmother. I have found a record in 1900 that says he was 5 and now he's
not sure of his birth year. As you may be able to tell, he came from the Native
American side of my family.
Alec was married to Ethel West on 1919, but separated after six months.
He tells a story that he wasn't allowed to date her, so one day when he found parents
were not home, he took Ethel to Corinth, Mississippi and married her.
While the divorce papers say she abandoned him, his sister says he once told her
that they were going back to Michie, Tennessee from Waterloo, Alabama by train, they both boarded,
but right as the train started to leave he jumped off. Guess he was afraid of her dad,
who he called "old man Bill West".
He said at the time he didn't know she was expecting.
After she left for Texas, he put an ad in the newspaper. He thought for sure he would hear from her, but nothing.
He didn't know how else to search for her back then.
Once at the McNairy County War Memorial festival (they have
each year at Shilo State Park) he was able to see his son Glen(n) Dubois(e), but that was more than 75 years ago.
At the time he didn't talk to Ethel, but his brother did. He didn't figure she would ever leave Tennesee.
Now he believes she may have moved to Hillsboro, Texas (Hill County) with her parents,
after their divorce was finalized in 1922.
